Wed March 7 started with a tour of Ben Thanh Market in downtown Saigon.
2_img_1165.jpg
The two main corridors are the *only* ones this wide in the huge market.
3_img_1148.jpg
Seafood and shellfish, one bin looks like giant snails...
4_img_1149.jpg

5_img_1150.jpg
Many varieties of eggs.
6_img_1151.jpg

7_img_1153.jpg
The exotic "dragon fruit", which I grew quite fond of.
8_img_1154.jpg

9_img_1155.jpg
The dreaded durian fruit and jackfruit. We later tried durian and it didn't seem as bad as its reputation. Must be an acquired dislike :>
10_img_1156.jpg
It does look pretty gross while being disemboweled...
11_img_1158.jpg
A little of everything, handbags and buddhas...
12_img_1159.jpg
Glass baubles...
13_img_1159_crop1.jpg
Very sparkly...
14_img_1161.jpg
A stall just for decorated slippers...
15_img_1163.jpg
Hats...
16_img_1164.jpg
A Buddha booth...
17_img_1168.jpg
Just outside the market.
18_img_1169.jpg
A statue to an ancient warrior.
19_img_1171.jpg
Another historic hotel in Saigon, the Majestic.
20_img_1173.jpg
We board a ferry to cross the Saigon River - just to get to the other side...
21_img_1174.jpg
An interesting fellow gets off.
22_img_1176.jpg
More motorcycle traffic on the ferry!
23_img_1182.jpg
View from across the river, and one of the sailors...
24_img_1172.jpg
Motorcycles disembarking, watch out!
25_img_1185.jpg
A craftsman working on a model ship.
26_img_1186.jpg
Vicki negotiating inside the "ship shop". Most of the shops are this narrow!
27_img_1187.jpg
Another historical hotel, the Caravelle.
28_img_1191_1192comp.jpg
Saigon's Notre Dame Cathedral - Nha Tho Duc Ba - Cathedral of our Lady. Built 1877 - 1883.
29_img_1188.jpg
The Central Post Office was built starting in 1886 by Gustave Eiffel (yes, the same as the Eiffel Tower).
30_img_1196.jpg
All across the front wall are the names of scientists that the French admired, including Benjamin Franklin!
31_img_1197.jpg
The Post Office is a huge, happenin' place.
32_img_1201.jpg
We were told that this aged gentleman used to be an employee of the post office. After he retired, he would come to the p.o. and help people from the country to write letters to family elsewhere. He refused to write negative, complaining letters!
33_img_1202.jpg
Meanwhile... Gerald is schmoozing with the locals outside, buying bananas, stamps, cokes...
34_img_1203_rot_crop.jpg
This is the Reunification Palace, before the "fall" it was the Presidential Palace.
35_img_1204.jpg
A view of Saigon from a restaurant on the top floor of the Prudential Building.
36_img_1205.jpg
You can see the Saigon River. Not much development across the river yet, but it is beginning to happen.
37_img_1207.jpg

38_img_1208.jpg
A very large city...
39_img_1212_crop.jpg
Some very colorful artwork in the restaurant.
40_img_1214.jpg
Fruits at a street vendor - maybe rambutan...?
41_img_1216.jpg
City Hall and Uncle Ho by daylight.
42_img_1217.jpg
The Opera House.
43_img_1221_rot_crop.jpg
The Rex Hotel by daylight. You can see the rooftop terrace, where we're about to go for cool juices. The temperatures *and* humidities were in the high 80's most of the time we were there.
44_img_1224_rot_crop.jpg
The rooftop terrace of the Rex.
45_img_1225.jpg
Steve relaxing on the terrace, and changing to a new videotape (one of *many*).
46_img_1232.jpg
More motorcycle traffic...
47_img_1234.jpg
Some streets were narrow, and sidewalks were used as motorcycle parking lots...
48_img_1235.jpg
The kids have just gotten out of school. The cotton candy vendor and the ice cream vendor are nearby.
49_img_1239.jpg
The ice cream vendor, even though on a bicycle, does play incessant inane music, but with an Asian lilt...
50_img_1240.jpg
The very colorful garbage "truck".
51_img_1241.jpg
A family of four on a motorbike! We saw as many as five on other occasions. The little one looks like she may have the most comfy spot - not saying the safest...
52_img_1242.jpg
One of the beautiful streets. The buildings are tall and narrow, we're told most are one room per floor.
53_img_1245.jpg
Beautiful vertical gardening.
